Real Madrid History

Reviewed 2026-08-24

Real Madrid's history stretches from the formal organisation of Madrid Foot Ball Club in 1902 to a position of exceptional influence in European football. The presidency of Santiago Bernabéu, the construction of a new stadium and the team built around Alfredo Di Stéfano were central to the club's transformation into a major international institution.

Foundation in Madrid

Real Madrid dates its official foundation to 6 March 1902, when the first Board of Directors of Madrid Foot Ball Club was elected. The event formalised a football organisation that would develop into one of the central institutions of Spanish sport.

The club's early decades established its domestic position, but the transformation that later gave Real Madrid a global identity accelerated significantly during the middle of the twentieth century.

The Santiago Bernabeu Era

Santiago Bernabéu became club president in 1943 and oversaw a major period of institutional development. His presidency included the construction of the new Chamartín stadium and the expansion of the club's sporting structure.

The stadium was later renamed the Santiago Bernabéu in 1955. During the same era, Real Madrid assembled a celebrated team featuring figures such as Alfredo Di Stéfano, Francisco Gento, Ferenc Puskás and Raymond Kopa.

Five European Cups in a Row

Real Madrid became the dominant force in the formative years of the European Cup. The club won the competition's first five editions consecutively between 1956 and 1960, an achievement that established a relationship between Real Madrid and European competition that would endure across generations.

A sixth European Cup followed in 1966. The early run of continental victories helped transform the club from a major Spanish side into an international sporting reference.

A Continuing European Identity

European success has remained one of the defining themes of Real Madrid history long after the original Di Stéfano generation. Different teams and different eras have continued to add continental honours to the club's record.

By 2026, Real Madrid's official history records fifteen European Cups in men's football. The scale and longevity of that record make continental competition inseparable from the modern identity of the club.
