REVIEWED EDITORIAL

Al Ahly History

Reviewed 2026-08-24

Al Ahly was established in Cairo in 1907 and developed into one of the defining institutions of Egyptian and African football. The club's history combines more than a century of domestic competition with a continental tradition that has made African football an essential part of its sporting identity.

Foundation in Cairo

Al Ahly was established in Cairo in 1907 during a period in which organised sporting institutions were developing rapidly in Egypt. Omar Lotfy was one of the central figures behind the project, and the club's first board was formed during April of that year.

The institution was conceived as more than a football team. It developed as a sporting and social club before football became the activity most closely associated with the Al Ahly name.

The Early Football Years

Al Ahly's football structure developed during the years after the club's foundation. The first football team dates to 1911, beginning a competitive history that would eventually place the club at the centre of the Egyptian game.

An important early trophy arrived with victory in the Sultan Hussein Cup in 1923. Success in the national competitions that followed gradually established Al Ahly as one of Egypt's leading football institutions.

The First Egyptian League

When the Egyptian national league championship began in the 1948-49 season, Al Ahly won the inaugural title. The achievement began an extraordinary opening period in which the club captured nine consecutive league championships.

That early dominance established a championship culture that continued across later generations and became one of the defining characteristics of Al Ahly's domestic history.

The African Breakthrough

Al Ahly reached a major continental milestone in 1982 by winning its first African championship. The final against Asante Kotoko began with a 3-0 victory in Cairo before a 1-1 result in Kumasi completed the title success.

The 1982 victory began a new dimension of the club's history. African competition subsequently became as important to Al Ahly's identity as its domestic record, with later generations continuing to add continental honours.

Club and Continental Identity

Al Ahly's historical importance is closely linked to longevity. The club has remained a major presence through different eras of Egyptian football while repeatedly competing at continental level.

Its combination of domestic achievement, large-scale support and sustained African competition has made Al Ahly one of the most recognisable football institutions associated with Cairo, Egypt and African club football.
