REVIEWED EDITORIAL

FC Bayern München History

Reviewed 2026-08-24

FC Bayern Munich began in 1900 with a group of young football enthusiasts and gradually developed from a Munich club into the dominant institution of German football. Its first national championship arrived in 1932, while the move to the Olympiastadion and three consecutive European Cup victories in the 1970s established Bayern as an international power.

Foundation in 1900

FC Bayern was founded in Munich on 27 February 1900 by a group led by Franz John. The creation of the club followed a disagreement over the place of football within the existing gymnastics organisation, and the new side began an independent football path in the Bavarian capital.

In 1906 Bayern joined forces with Münchner Sport-Club for practical and financial reasons while retaining its independence. The arrangement also influenced the colours associated with the club, with red and white becoming part of Bayern's lasting visual identity.

First German Championship

After developing through the early decades of German football, Bayern achieved its first national championship in 1932. The title was secured with a 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the championship final in Nuremberg.

That first national success came long before Bayern became the dominant force later associated with the Bundesliga era, illustrating that the club's competitive history reaches well into the pre-Bundesliga period.

From Grunwalder Strasse to the Olympiastadion

Bayern played for many years at the stadium on Grünwalder Straße before moving to Munich's Olympiastadion in 1972. The move coincided with a period in which the club was becoming increasingly powerful in both German and European football.

The new setting became associated with a generation featuring some of the most important figures in German football and provided the stage for a club whose ambitions had expanded far beyond its local beginnings.

Three European Cups in Succession

Bayern reached a historic European peak between 1974 and 1976. In 1974 it became the first German club to win the European Cup, defeating Atlético Madrid after a replay in the final.

The team successfully defended the trophy against Leeds United in 1975 and defeated Saint-Étienne in the 1976 final. Three successive European Cups established Bayern among the major powers of continental football and remain a defining chapter of the club's history.
