Paris Saint-Germain was created in 1970 through a project designed to establish a major football club in the French capital. Its formation brought together the ambitions of Paris Football Club and the football structure of Stade Saint-Germain, creating a new Parisian institution that moved rapidly through French football before developing a substantial domestic and European record.
Creation of Paris Saint-Germain
The process that created Paris Saint-Germain accelerated during the spring and summer of 1970. Paris Football Club had been established with the objective of creating a major team in the capital and agreed to combine its project with the football section of Stade Saint-Germain.
A series of votes and administrative decisions completed the process. The official name change to Paris Saint-Germain Football Club was accepted on 12 August 1970, the date the club recognises as its official birth.
A Fast Start in French Football
Paris Saint-Germain began competitive life in the National division, the level corresponding to today's Ligue 2. The newly created side combined professional recruits with players connected to Stade Saint-Germain and immediately pursued promotion.
The first season produced a championship at that level in 1971. The achievement gave the young club an unusually rapid route toward the French top flight and provided its first official trophy only months after its creation.
Parisian Colours and Identity
The formation of PSG also involved creating a visual identity for a new club. During the discussions surrounding the merger, plans were developed around red, white and blue — colours that connected the new institution with both Paris and the Saint-Germain component of its origins.

The victory was the club's first major European trophy and marked an important stage in its development from a relatively young French institution into a club with a recognised continental achievement.
