Sport Lisboa e Benfica traces its origins to a group of football enthusiasts who founded Sport Lisboa in Belém in 1904. The institution later combined with Sport Clube de Benfica, creating the name and organisational structure that became Benfica, before developing into one of Portugal's most important football clubs and winning consecutive European Cups in 1961 and 1962.
Foundation in Belem
The club's story began on 28 February 1904 with the creation of Sport Lisboa. After a morning training session on grounds in Belém, a group of 24 founders met later that day at the nearby Farmácia Franco and formally established the new sporting organisation.
The founders came from groups of young football enthusiasts already playing in the Belém area. Their new club was initially centred strongly on football and began developing a reputation in Lisbon competition during its earliest years.
Becoming Sport Lisboa e Benfica
The modern Benfica identity took shape through a later organisational union. Grupo Sport Benfica, an organisation with strong involvement in cycling and athletics, developed facilities in the Benfica area while Sport Lisboa needed a more permanent sporting base.
On 13 September 1908, the structures of Sport Clube de Benfica and Grupo Sport Lisboa were brought together. Sport Lisboa added Benfica to its name, producing the designation Sport Lisboa e Benfica that the institution still uses today.
The Rise of the Glorioso
One of Sport Lisboa's important early victories came in 1907 against Carcavellos Club, a team associated with the strong British football presence in Portugal at the time. The result increased the young club's prestige and contributed to the growth of its following.
As the club became established around Benfica, crowds and sporting ambitions increased. The nickname Glorioso became associated with the institution, while its expanding membership and competition record helped turn Benfica into a major presence in Portuguese football.
Back-to-Back European Champions
Benfica reached the peak of European club football under coach Bela Guttmann. In the 1960-61 European Cup, the Portuguese champions progressed to the final and defeated Barcelona to win the competition for the first time.
Benfica successfully defended the trophy in 1961-62. The final against Real Madrid ended in a 5-3 victory, giving the Lisbon club consecutive European Cups and creating one of the most important international achievements in Portuguese football history.
