Juventus was created in Turin in 1897 by a group of young students whose enthusiasm for the relatively new game of football produced one of Italy's most enduring sporting institutions. From its youthful beginnings and early pink shirts, the club developed the black-and-white identity that became internationally recognisable and built a history closely associated with repeated periods of Italian success.
Birth of Juventus
Juventus was founded in Turin on 1 November 1897 by a group of students from the Massimo D'Azeglio school. The founders were remarkably young, and that fact helped inspire the name they chose: Juventus, derived from the Latin word for youth.
Enrico Canfari became the club's first president and Piazza d'Armi served as its first playing ground. The team originally played in pink, giving the earliest Juventus side an appearance very different from the black-and-white identity that would later become synonymous with the club.
Becoming the Bianconeri
Juventus entered the Italian national championship in 1900 while still playing in pink. A few years later the club adopted the black-and-white colours that became the basis of its permanent football identity. The new shirts had links with Nottingham in England and gave rise to the Bianconeri image associated with Juventus ever since.
The first Italian championship arrived in 1905. That early title demonstrated that the young Turin club had already progressed from a group created by school friends into a serious force in organised Italian football.
The Golden Five-Year Period
One of the first great dynasties in Juventus history developed during the first half of the 1930s. From 1930 to 1935, Juventus won five Italian league championships in succession, establishing a period remembered by the club as its Golden Five-Year era.
Coach Carlo Carcano and a squad containing major Italian and international figures helped create a team whose influence extended beyond club football. Juventus players also formed an important part of the Italian national side during the period in which Italy won the 1934 World Cup.
The Agnelli Connection
A major institutional change had taken place before that championship run. In 1923, Edoardo Agnelli was elected president of Juventus. The beginning of the Agnelli family's relationship with the club became one of the most important long-term associations in European football.
During the same period Juventus strengthened its sporting infrastructure and competitive ambitions. The combination of institutional stability, expanding support and repeated championship success helped establish the club as one of the central names in Italian football history.
