Al-Hilal was founded in Riyadh in 1957 and developed into one of the most prominent football institutions in Saudi Arabia and Asia. The club began under the name Al-Olympi before adopting the Al-Hilal name and the blue-and-white identity that became recognised across Saudi and continental football.
Foundation in Riyadh
Al-Hilal's story began in Riyadh in 1957 under founder Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Saeed. The new football team was originally known as Al-Olympi and began building its sporting and administrative structure during a formative period for organised football in the Saudi capital.
The club's founder played a central role in those early years, carrying significant responsibility for the organisation while the team gradually developed a broader institutional structure.
From Al-Olympi to Al-Hilal
The original Al-Olympi name was later replaced. Al-Yamamah, Al-Wehda and Al-Hilal were among the names proposed, and Al-Hilal was ultimately selected as the permanent name of the club.
Blue and white became the identifying colours of the team. The name and colours together formed a football identity that would become closely associated with Riyadh and Saudi sporting success.
