REVIEWED EDITORIAL

Liverpool History

Reviewed 2026-08-24

Liverpool Football Club was established at Anfield in 1892 and developed from a new Merseyside side into one of the defining institutions of English and European football. Its history links the creation of the club, the transformation led by Bill Shankly and the European dominance that followed under Bob Paisley with a football identity that remains closely associated with Anfield.

Foundation at Anfield

Liverpool Football Club officially came into existence in 1892 after a dispute separated John Houlding and his associates from Everton. Everton left Anfield, while Houlding retained the ground and set about creating a new football team to play there. The new organisation was formally recognised on 3 June 1892.

That unusual beginning made Anfield part of Liverpool's identity from the club's first days. Rather than moving into an established home after formation, the new club was effectively created around a stadium that had suddenly been left without a team.

The Shankly Transformation

Bill Shankly arrived as manager in December 1959 when Liverpool were competing in the Second Division. His work changed the sporting direction and culture of the club. Liverpool returned to the First Division in 1962 and under Shankly won league championships, the club's first FA Cup and its first European trophy.

The period also helped establish several visual and cultural elements later associated with Liverpool. The all-red playing strip became established during the Shankly era, while Anfield and its supporters became central to the image of the team he was building.

Paisley and the European Era

When Shankly retired in 1974, Bob Paisley inherited the managerial position after years inside Liverpool's coaching structure. The transition maintained the methods developed around the famous Boot Room while producing an extraordinary period of domestic and European success.

Liverpool won its first European Cup in 1977 and retained the trophy in 1978. Paisley later guided the club to another European Cup in 1981, making continental competition a defining part of Liverpool's sporting identity.

European Legacy

Liverpool's European Cup and Champions League victories span different generations. After the successes of 1977, 1978, 1981 and 1984, the club returned to the summit of Europe in 2005 and again in 2019.

The six victories recorded across those eras illustrate how Liverpool's international reputation was built not around one isolated team, but through repeated periods of success separated by decades of football history.
