REVIEWED EDITORIAL

Ajax History

Reviewed 2026-08-24

Ajax was founded in Amsterdam in 1900 and developed into one of the most influential football clubs in European history. Its story includes early domestic success, the long-term development of a distinctive training culture and the extraordinary team that won three consecutive European Cups at the beginning of the 1970s.

Foundation in Amsterdam

AFC Ajax was founded on 18 March 1900 in Amsterdam. The club spent much of its first decade outside the highest level of Dutch football before earning promotion in 1911.

An important figure in the early development of Ajax was English coach Jack Reynolds. His long association with the club helped shape its training culture, and Ajax won its first Dutch national championship in 1918.

Growth at De Meer

Ajax became increasingly prominent during the decades before its European breakthrough. The 1930s were particularly successful domestically, and in 1934 the club moved into the stadium that became known as De Meer.

De Meer remained Ajax's home for more than six decades. It became the setting in which generations of players developed and where the club strengthened both its Amsterdam identity and its reputation for producing technically accomplished footballers.

The European Trilogy

Ajax reached the summit of European football at the beginning of the 1970s. The club won the European Cup for the first time in 1971, defeating Panathinaikos at Wembley, and retained the trophy in 1972 with victory over Internazionale.

A third consecutive European Cup followed in 1973 when Ajax defeated Juventus in Belgrade. Johan Cruijff and the football ideas associated with Rinus Michels were central to the wider reputation of this era, which became one of the defining periods in European club football.

Success Across Generations

The achievements of the early 1970s were not the end of Ajax's European story. The club won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1987 with Johan Cruijff as coach and captured the UEFA Cup in 1992 under Louis van Gaal.

In 1995, a young Ajax side again reached the highest level of European football and became European and world champions. That later success strengthened the idea that Ajax's historical importance rested not only on one golden generation but also on its ability to develop new ones.
