FC Barcelona was founded in 1899 by Joan Gamper and a diverse group of football enthusiasts in a rapidly changing city. From those international beginnings, the club developed a particularly strong connection with Barcelona and Catalonia, while its growth from early local grounds through Les Corts and Camp Nou reflected its transformation into a major sporting institution.
Joan Gamper and the Foundation
FC Barcelona was founded on 29 November 1899 after Joan Gamper brought together a group interested in establishing a football club in the city. Gamper had previously published an appeal seeking players, and the resulting foundation meeting brought together people from several national backgrounds.
The international composition of the founding group became part of the club's early character. At the same time, the organisation adopted the name and symbols of Barcelona, beginning a relationship between football club and city that would become increasingly important.
Survival and Early Identity
The club's earliest years were not simply a period of sporting growth. FC Barcelona's own historical account describes a struggle for stability in which Gamper repeatedly played a decisive role as player, organiser and later president.
